Manage your online reputation

The internet has changed the way consumers preceive your brand and one group of users can have a huge influence over your reputation. Loss of reputation means loss of confidence which we all know in today’s economic down turn with the credit crunch results in lost revenue. So what can you do to ensure that your reputation is maintained.

  • Listen

To what your consumers have to say, communication is 80% listening.

  • Talk

Speak to consumers in a way they can understand. Don’t generalise.

  • Engage

Don’t just sit there, get out and build a relationship with your customers. Start with building trust, it’s the cornerstone of any good relationship. Develop and understand your customer segments and build a personal profile for each one of these to help visualise the person your engaging with.

  • Measure

Continuously monitor what’s being said on blogs, forums, social networks, customer service reps, sales.. Sort these into negative, positive and most popular. Take you course of action and measure the impact of your actions so adjustments can be made accordingly. Tools such as trackur, buzz logic, and many more can be used to help you organise this information.

what about txt goggles

While on the topic of email I thought it was appropriate to congratulate google on their latest gMail feature - mail goggles. If you’re inclined to send drunkn emails during the weekend, google have the solution! You can now turn on a feature in gmail that will ask you to complete a mathimathical equation before you hit send! Mail googles goggles
If only I could have that feature for txt messages on my Nokia phone! Actually come to think of it maybe google have this feature on their New google phone! If not, my guess is that they’re already thinking about it. My hat goes off to google yet again, shows that the 80/20 rule really works :-)

email marketing funnel

The email funnel is a great way to represent your EDM campaign and how you can make improvements. If your overall goal is to increase email sales then you need to optimise each step of the way to close that sale. What ever ESP (Email Service Provider) you use make sure they deliver all the neccessary key success metrics. I’ve put together an email funnel which I use to help visualise the success criteria for an EDM campaign and what needs to be changed to improve results.Bottom line, never make a change without measuring it.

All systems go with Norton 2009!

Win a Trip to space!

Symantec, makers of Norton products such as Norton 360, Norton Internet Security, and Norton AntiVirus are offering consumers the chance to win a trip to space to celebrate their 2009 product launch! Unfortunately this isn’t open to Irish consumers.
nortonspace
This competition ties in with the 2009 campaign “Smart Security, Engineered for Speed” which focuses on the improvements made in Norton 2009 to make the products even lighter on resources and faster than ever before.  Norton also have some pretty aggressive claims this year such as 1 minute install and free support in some countries.

I can tell you that Norton have been pretty hurt by the slow perception of their products over the last few years. Granted this was true in 2006 but the latest products have a very low impact on system resources. There’s alot of free products in the market today such as AVG, ZoneAlarm etc and you can of course patch together your own homemade solution but does this really give you confidence that you’re secured? You have install multiple solutions from multiple software companies which means more resources running in the background which deliver updates at different times! The bottom line is that i want to install a security product and get on with my work. no nags, no update issues, no worries.

Tiger Woods not a Glitch

I was listening to Newstalk as usual this morning and heard a nice piece on the new Tiger Woods 2009 game. The new game is deemed to have a glitch where Tiger Woods can walk on water and hit his ball back into play. Religious groups are calling for a bycot of the game as the game depicts Tiger as Jesus. I was wondering what EA sports reaction would be to the glitch and would they receive a huge negative reaction. I did a quick search on youtube to see for myself what the glitch was about and found a very positive response from EA sports below.
This is a wonderful example of how a large organisation should respond to a potential deadly threat to their product. Instead of EA going into hiding and letting the glitch manifest itself into something greater, their positive response has helped turn that frown upside down! This well clever little response brought a smile to my face on yet another grey sky day in Ireland! Well done EA!PS. EA: Are ye working on a Padraig Harrington game yet? If Tiger can walk on water, think of what Harrington could do!

A delicious new interface

Today and came across some neat sites that I wanted to bookmark using my preferred social bookmark plugin – delicious.
However I was on a different PC without the handy plugin so I went to delicious.com to download and install the plugin.
There I was greeted with a brand spanking new interface by delicious.com which I have to say I’m very impressed by.
Here’s the screenshot of the homepage.

Delicious New Interface
The site still maintains the same simple look and feel but the functional changes are simply brilliant, I especially love the new Tag section.

Irish CEO, Cuil takes on Google

July 28th 2008, a new search engine named Cuil ~cool launches and aims to take on Google!

Irish born Tom Costello, CEO and Founder originally from Drogheda is leading Cuil’s highly motivated and experienced team.

Cuil has the talent and knowledge required with ex employees of Google and IBM on the team they are surely bound for success.

 Cuil Homepage

Cuil claim to have a largest search index on the planet which is caused Google to sit up and pay attention.

Google have responded to their claim on their official blog post http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2008/07/we-knew-web-was-big.html

Basically Google are saying that they have the largest index but they don’t shout about it.

I guess the question is how relevant is Cuil’s index and how do their results compare to that of google?

So the following thoughts and questions come to mind.

  • How relevant are their searches?
  • How will they counteract Spam SEO techniques?
  • Will Cuil be just a fad?
  • What differentiates Cuil from other search engines?
  • How can they make money?
  • Brand recognition / equity?
  • Will users bookmark cuil.com as their home page?
  • What about user generated content?
  • What’s their capacity?

Seems as though Cuil got too hot after launching and suffered the digg effect as reported by techcrunch http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/07/28/andcuil-is-down/

Google have acquired so many web properties and applications over the years to help build a more relavent index.

Google analytics, docs, webmasters, books, journals….

Youtube

Blogger

Jaiku

Feedburner

Orkut

The list is endless but all have a common goal

  • Acquire talent, knowledge, IP, users and to deliver a better a relevant experience for the user which help google deliver relevant ads to make money.

More on this one later..

Why amn’t I blogging?!!

Guinness Free Poker Set Campaign

Being a Guinness lover I came across an advert on rte’s website today offering a free poker set for anyone that signs up. Everyone loves free stuff and I’m no different so of course I clicked through and signed up and looking forward to my free poker set!

Guinness Poker Nights

With the social shift of people inviting their friends over for a few drinks instead of going to the pub, Guinness are striving to grow their off-license sales. Recently Guinness have reported an increase in sales of their draft cans and have now equally increased their advertising budget to tap into this market. Guinness have done 3 things very well with their poker campaign.

  • Give Free Stuff!!

People love free stuff, web 2.0 is all about FREE FREE FREE. Say no more!

  • Be current

Guinness have tapped into the poker market. Every where I look I see online poker ads. They’re on TV, online, bus stop posters, bill board everywhere! VCpoker have just launched they’re online poker website which is being heavily advertised to the Irish market using the well known face of Ken Doherty. Guinness can now acquire search traffic using poker related keywords and because poker is something you do with your friends what’s more perfect than gathering your friends around a table with a few cans of draft Guinness playing some poker.

  • Be viral

We all know that viral campaigns can be extremely power especially if they are personalised. Guinness Poker campaign lets you send a personalised video to your friends. Enter their name, nickname and traits and your friend will receive a tailored video inviting them to sign up for the free pack. pretty sweet! Some other examples are www.nevergiveup.ie This campaign promoted the sponsors of the Irish Rugby team Powerade.

The funny thing is before writing this blog I was shopping for Christmas presents and popped into a bookshop where there was plenty of poker books adorning the shelves. Talking to my mates over a few pints of Guinness at the weekend about what to buy the girlfriend my mate was also in the store looking at the same poker books! so where does this leave us? It seems that Guinness have tapped into something very powerful here. Lads love to bet and doing it between friends over some drinks is safer and not as hard on the pocket! Fair play to the Guinness marketing team to identifying this opportunity to grow their off license sales and keeping their customers happy by the fire :-)
